Mindfulness Meditation Classes

SF Insight typically sponsors three introductory meditation courses each year. The next five-week class is described at the bottom of this page.

Intermediate Mindfulness Meditation

A Six-Week Class with Will Kabat-Zinn

The class will take place on six consecutive Monday evenings: September 15, 22 & 29, October 6, 13 & 20 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. It also includes a daylong retreat on Saturday, October 18, from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.

This class will offer a deepening exploration of the practice of Insight Meditation, emphasizing the Four Foundations of Mindfulness (Satipatthana) and Mindfulness of Breathing (Anapanasati). This class is intended for those who have an established meditation practice and are looking to deepen their practice in a group context. Each session will include guided meditation instruction, talks on the Buddha's teachings, and time for questions and dialogue to explore the application of the teachings and practice in the participants' daily life and experience. People of all ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities are welcome.

Will Kabat-Zinn has practiced Vipassana meditation intensively in the U.S. and in Burma and currently lives and teaches in the San Francisco bay area. Will teaches regularly at SF Insight, Sprit Rock, and The California Institute for Integral Studies. For the past eight years he has taught meditation and awareness practices to incarcerated youth, first in New York City and currently in Alemeda County. He is in teacher training with Jack Kornfield. An MFT intern in private practice in San Francisco and Berkeley, Will sees individuals and couples for psychotherapy (Supervised by Jeff Kitzes MFC24988).

Buddhist Mindfulness Meditation:

A Five-Week Introductory Class with Meg Levie & Sean Feit

The class will take place on five consecutive Thursday evenings: October 16, 23, 30, November 6, 13 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. It also includes a daylong retreat on Saturday, November 8 from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm. The course will be taught by two senior Bay Area Dharma teachers, Meg Levie and Sean Feit.

This class will offer Buddhist meditation instruction based on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness. Each session will include guided meditation instruction, talks on basic Buddhist teachings, and time for questions and discussion to explore the application of the teachings and practice into participants' daily life and experience. This class is appropriate for those new to meditation or early on in their practice. People of all ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender identities are welcome.

Meg Levie has lived and practiced at the San Francisco Zen Center since 1994 and received ordination as a Zen priest in 2003. Currently she enjoys offering the Dharma to the wider world through professional coaching and teaching mindfulness in organizations. This fall she will become the guiding teacher for the Bolinas branch of the Mountain Source Sangha.

Sean Feit has practiced Dharma for 15 years in Zen and Theravadan Buddhist lineages, including monastic ordination in Burma in 2002, and study with both Western and Asian teachers. He is a student of Jack Kornfield and Eugene Cash at Spirit Rock, where he leads Kirtan (devotional chanting) for retreats.

Mindfulness Daylong

With Meg Levie & Sean Feit

The November 8 Mindfulness Daylong is open to everyone, not just those taking the five-week Buddhist Mindfulness Meditation Class. If you are taking the five-week class, there is no additional cost and there is no need to register for this event. If you just want to attend the daylong, the fee is $10 and we encourage you to pre-register (but there will also be registration at the door the day of the event).

Buddhist teachings are considered priceless. In that spirit, these classes will be offered on a dana basis. Dana means generosity. All who attend are invited to contribute in appreciation of the teaching and in support of the teachers.
